Shared custody advocates rally in Wallingford

Jesse Buchanan | 0 comments WALLINGFORD - Advocates of changes in child custody laws rallied Saturday at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn for a bill that they say would help bring equity when courts determine shared custody for children of divorced parents. The bill, proposed by state Sen. Len Fasano (R-North Haven) is intended to “establish a presumption of shared custody in a dispute involving the custody of a minor child.” Jerry Mastrangelo, a divorced father of three triplets, said he’s been fighting a two and a half-year custody battle and told his story to Fasano. Mastrangelo is advocating for changes in the way custody and visitation is assigned to divorced parents. “He was telling me about the problems he was having, not seeing his kids for three years,” Fasano said. Proposed bill number 77 is currently in the state legislature’s judiciary committee, according to Fasano. He urged the crowd of about 75 to attend public hearings at the capital and share their experience of how current custody laws can alienate parents and cost thousands of dollars in fees. “You have to tell your story,” Fasano said. “”This issue is catching on. We have to bring this across the finish line.” |
