A Very, Un-Merry Christmas Nightmare
CHRISTMAS 2010 AUDIO
Christmas 2010
We didn't think we would get to see April for that Christmas at all. On December 18 a gymnastics community was floored with how far Christy would go. My family and I drove the usual 2 hours to the gymnastics gym to pick up April for our half of the Christmas break. There also happened to be a gymnastics meet on that Saturday. April was kept out of the meet. The time came around for the meet to start and parents, teammates and finally the head coach came up to me asking me where April was. Her mother was keeping her out so that she could spend the first half of Christmas break with me. Coaches, family, friends, and fellow gymnasts were all in shock. My family drove the two hours back home not having any idea when we would see April again. We were to celebrate Christmas the evening of December 25th at my brother's house in Anaheim this year. For ever, our side of the family has celebrated on Christmas Eve. That's when we open Christmas gifts, For the past 10 years Christmas Eve's my ex-wife has insisted that April spend it with her and her side of the family. This year, our family decided to get together on Christmas Day eve and exchange gifts. Unfortunately, it would have to be without April. We had completely surrendered to the fact that we were not going to see April, when Christy sent my wife, Tammy, a text: From: Christy Tue, Dec 21, 2010 at 10:58 AM To: Tammy "Hi just wanted to let u know april will be driving with jackie to jerees for christmas. Thanks" WHAT?! You could imagine our surprise, our family was going to be allowed to see April for Christmas! Well, things went a little different than that. When me and my family arrived, April was already there, we all opened gifts and spent the evening like we do on any other Christmas loving and laughing, enjoying each other's company. Little did we know that behind our backs, some sinister planning had been taking place. It wasn't until 2 years later that we found out how insidious and bad it was until I was looking over some old phone records. (As it tuned out my nephews phone log had about a dozen calls that evening from Mike (Step-dad), Kaylee, and Christy. I think its fair to say that they were not talking to my nephew Christian. But more on this later) At around 9 pm, we are getting ready to leave and April does something she has never done in her life, not even as a toddler, she throws a major temper tantrum.
She is claiming that she wants to spend the night because she misses her cousins. Both my brother and his wife explain to April that she isn't invited to spend the night, not to mention I am also letting her know that she doesn't have my permission either. Still, April is adamant. I am also communicating with my sister for advice.. We are all in agreement that there is absolutely no reason for the amount of defiance that April was displaying. She had never completely disregarded an adults authority much less her parents. After 45 minutes we are able to get her to get up and start walking out. We are not on the road 10 minutes when we start getting threatening text messages from Christy and Mike. The following are voice mails left on my phone on December 25, 2010. It is raining and we are traveling to Las Vegas. In the suburban are my wife, Tammy; her brother Tom, and her mother Lois; our girls, Malia, Jaida, Sophie and April. I am driving. We were on our way to Las Vegas to see Phantom Of The Opera...and the next day we were dropping off Tammy's brother, Tom at McCarran Airport to catch a flight back to Bismarck. Remember: Christy was at work & wants us to drop April off there.
